Overview

Here is a brief description of our farm.

Bluebird Gardens is a 205-acre, family-owned vegetable farm operated by Mark and Diane Boen. It is located in Fergus Falls, MN, in Otter Tail County.

Our offices and family home are located on the farm at 26060 County Hwy 18, Fergus Falls, MN, 56537. The farm also has eight high tunnels, a packing house, two greenhouses, eight cabins (for employees and interns), and a wind turbine

The total land under management by Bluebird Gardens includes crop fields, woodland, wetland, and residential areas. Part of this land has been in their family for three generations. The rest has been acquired over the years in pieces, with the most recent piece of land having been purchased in 2010 (this additional parcel is located across Hwy 18 from the main farmland).

Of the 205 acres currently owned by Mark and Diane Boen, 150 are farmed. The vast majority of this land is for vegetable production, with some additional acreage used to grow mushrooms and fruits.

In 2010, Bluebird Gardens started operating as a CSA. That same year, we began raising chickens and pigs in addition to vegetables. Bluebird Gardens got rid of the chickens and pigs at the end of 2011. Bluebird Gardens will not have any livestock in 2012, but we will have 40 bee hives on the farm managed by Mark Sundberg of Sundberg Apiaries in Fergus Falls, MN.

While in the past vegetables have been sold at temporary stands in Fergus Falls and wholesaled, this year the produce from Bluebird Gardens will be sold only to CSA members via shares

Bluebird Gardens employs anywhere between 10 - 15 people during the summer months. We have one full-time, year-round employee (Jim McKnabb) in addition to Mark and Diane Boen. Learn more about our staff on the staff page of this website.
